What is Collagen

Collagen is a natural skeletal protein and is one of the body's most abundant components, making up nearly 80% of the body's skin, muscles and connective tissue. So, when our collagen production slows down, our skin develops wrinkles and starts to sag and our hair can lose its lustre.

Though the human body creates collagen naturally, the amount of collagen it creates decreases over time. From around the age of 25 it starts to decline at a rate of 1.5% a year and by the age of 60, it is thought most women have lost more than 50% of their collagen levels.

Collagen in the skin

The Dermis makes up 90% of skin's thickness, this middle layer of skin is a fibrous structure composed of collagen, elastic tissue, and other components that includes amongst others, hair follicles.

Collagen is a major component of your skin. It plays a role in strengthening skin, as well as in elasticity and hydration.

Skin structure

Collagen is needed to support your skin structure and elasticity, as our collagen levels deplete, we lose this support our skin starts to sag and wrinkles appear.

Hydration

Collagen helps to keep your skin hydrated and hydrated skin is less prone to wrinkles and dry, flaky skin. As we age and our collagen levels drop our skin may become dry.

Hair Growth

Skin elasticity also applies to your scalp so as our collagen levels drop your hair may also be affected.  The dermal layer where your hair follicles are situated can experience damage, leading to age-related thinning and hair loss.

Why Hydrolysed Marine Collagen?

The percentage of collagen that is actually absorbed into your body when ingested (bioavailability) is critical to the effectiveness of the supplement. Bioavailability largely determines how well any nutrient you ingest works. The issue with collagen molecules is that they are enormous, so unless they’ve been hydrolysed, they are simply too big to be absorbed when ingested, and never reach the dermis, which is the underlying layer of the skin where collagen lives.

The Hydrolysed Marine Collagen in ReZest Collagen absorbs quickly into the body and is allowed to make its way to the areas it is needed most. The marine collagen used in our products is a high quality and researched fish collagen from a sustainable source.
